Sketch 9 - Lower Myra Falls

Lower Myra Falls in the high alpine of Vancouver Island is an area that often experiences sudden weather changes, a quality that made it an ideal area to test and expand my a recent style. I allowed me to test this approach to painting to capture the atmospheric quality of being shrouded in rain or being inside a cloud, and how it reduces the world to what is immediately around you. At the same time, I wanted to experiment with this geometric approach to Impressionism by creating a composition that would require more complexity; form and shape balanced against detail, color balanced against tone and contract.
