When Dr. Priya Chokshi shared her vision for this commissioned painting, I couldn't help but feel inspired myself. Her love for Bryson City shone brightly, and her dream was to bring that love to life through a panoramic view of the town's most cherished landmarks. I knew I needed to experience the essence of this beautiful place firsthand, so Joe and I planned a visit to capture it in its full glory through reference photos.
On the day Joe and I visited Bryson City, the town was buzzing with activity. Main Street was alive with tourists eager to board the Polar Express and explore the charming local shops, all decked out for the holidays. Though we had passed by Bryson City on our way to Murphy, NC, many times before, we had never truly realized how special this place was until that day.
Priya had mentioned that incorporating the train into the painting would make it even more meaningful to her, though she knew I primarily focus on landscapes. I was determined to honor her vision and create something that reflected the heart of Bryson City. As we explored, we took countless photos of the river, the train, the Smoky Mountains, and a stunning view of the town from a local church that left a lasting impression.
Joe was incredibly supportive and instrumental in helping me shape the composition. He discovered the perfect scene: the train winding along tracks at the foot of the Smoky Mountains, wrapping around Darnell Farms. Though the river was not visible in that particular spot, it flows along the base of those same mountains, and so does the Smoky Mountain Expressway. I wanted to pay homage to the area's beloved landmarks, so I included a subtle nod to Darnell Farms at the end of the right panel, along with a faint glimpse of the parkway. Locals will recognize the scene immediately!
We passed the time at a local eatery while waiting for the 5:00 p.m. train, hoping there would still be enough daylight for the perfect shot. As the Polar Express came into view, the sun dipped low, casting soft peach tones across the mountain peaks. To my delight, the conductor paused on the tracks, allowing us to capture incredible photos of the train, the mountains, and the surrounding beauty. Those onboard were just as fortunate, enjoying the stunning views of the Smokies.
In that magical hour, I also caught glimpses of the life and joy in Bryson City: two black labs chasing a frisbee with a couple, a family of eight playing together in the field, and countless others strolling the path along the river or savoring the day at Darnell Farms.
While I couldn't find a panoramic view of the Smoky Mountains and river together, I believe I captured the heart of what makes Bryson City so special. From its breathtaking scenery to the warmth of its community, every detail in this painting reflects the magic of the place Priya holds so dear. Thank you, Priya, for trusting me to bring your vision to life. It was an honor to paint the beauty and spirit of Bryson City.
