The Path

Oil on canvas, the Choptank River near my home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, is a path for many things including birds, crustaceans, waterman, hunters and pleasure boaters. But historically, it was a path for slaves escaping the tobacco farms of the Eastern Shore heading for Wilmington, Delaware and freedom. A view of these magnificent marshes and waterways never fails to move me and it is a repeated theme in my work.
