Saved: Cologne Cathedral

The Cologne Cathedral is unique in that it was one of the only structures left standing in Cologne after WWII. Why was it saved and what does it mean for humanity. I thought placing the figure in front of the cathedral looking up to heavens would emphasize its dramatic upward thrust, the immensity of the structure and the nature of our relationship to such iconic relics.
